CV Template with Achievements Focus

This is our favourite CV template. It is our favourite for one main reason. That reason is that this CV template works! We also like it because it makes sense from a sales perspective. Remember that your CV or resume is a sales document. It plays well for the candidate and recruiter for the following reasons:

  • In the world of sales you get what are called features and benefits. In our world of getting the right role for you, a feature is a skill, competency or experience. The benefit is how you use those skills, competencies or experience for an achievement – the outcome. It is pointless being highly skilled and experienced if you never do anything with it. We don’t sell skills or competencies. We sell the outcome of applying them – the achievements.
  • Employers’ adverts, person specifications and job descriptions are laden with skill, competency and experience requirements (and occasionally knowledge). They tell you what they want. Our job is simply to match their needs with potential benefits (our achievements). We want to capitalise on this to be at the top of the CV pile. This CV template will do that.
  • In sales you never replace the customers language with your own – even if they are using the wrong language. For this CV template we will use their language throughout. That sends a signal that we are already familiar with their language and, possibly, their culture.
  • Recruitment systems largely scan for key words. This CV template uses those words the system is looking for.

To make things easy, we have prepared a Word template for you. For the UK, stretch this to 2 pages. For the States, just one page. To download, simply complete the form below, and the template will be sent to you, together with directions. This will also register you with Candidate Tips for future articles and tips on how to find the right job.

Earlier Career

If you have a long career history, and following 4-6 career history sections above, you can now consolidate your earlier career. Use whole year format (not months) if you have the odd gap in your career. Just bullet these using the same headings, but you do not need to provide any further description or achievements.

Qualifications and Professional Development

Generally this section should again be reverse chronological. Start with your academic and professional qualifications. Then be selective in your list of courses and use those most pertinent to the vacancy.

Qualification/Course Provider Years

Additional Skills

For this CV template, these are the skills that do not fit well into the qualifications section or would sometimes be placed in the now largely redundant personal information section. They typically include driving license, languages and computing skills.

Hobbies and Interests

Keep this brief and very interesting. Be specific so they have something to talk to you about. Remember, gardening, cooking, DIY, fitness and eating out gets boring. Try instead of fitness, “Running half-marathons with a current best time of 2 hours and 34 minutes.”

Also ensure that none of the hobbies or interests could be misinterpreted (such as socialising, or a long list of external posts which could be viewed as taking up too much time), or morally looked down upon (such as fishing or hunting). Always tell the truth here. If you put down a sport which you have not participated in for years, the chances are your interviewer will be an expert practitioner in that activity. You will get caught out.

Why are you offering them? Have they asked? You just lost another 6-8 cm’s on your CV template which could be better used elsewhere.
